Welcome To Asian Exploitation 101 |
This course will consist of the following, at which at the end of the quarter there will be a final exam: 1. European Colonialism - Here will we will examine the historical accounts of European entry into Asian countries, and how it has lead to literature/propaganda. We will take a look at how novels and plays like Shogun and Madame Butterfly have helped develop the myth that the Asian woman has a mystical attraction to the white man. 2. American Military Bases - Prostitution, War Brides, exploited exotic singers/dancers hired to entertain American soldiers, etc. 3. Chinese Railroad Workers - Before the movies and words like 'geek' and 'nerd', we will look at how the white man in America historically attempted to 'emasculate' the Asian man. 4. The Movies - Here we will look at the role the Asian man plays to help bolster the heroic image of the white man. We will take a look at stereotype movies like Charlie Chan, as well as compare the movie-for-tv series "Shogun" to the more modern movie "The Last Samauri" just to see if any improvements have been made. 5. General Overview Of The Media's Portrayal Of Both The Asian Man As Well As Woman - We will examine statements from radio disc-jockeys, TV commercials, stand-up comedians, porno, clothing products, etc., in relation to the Asian man. We will also examine how the "westernized image" in the media of the Asian woman, has lead to an increase in "Asiaphelia". We will ask ourselves questions like: "If commercials can send sub-liminal messages that cause us to run to Taco Bell, why do we assume that 100 years of media stereotype has had no affect on our dating preferences. 6. The Internet (websites, blogs, discussion forums) - We will see how the computer has become a tool in promoting Asiaphelia. We will take a look at websites designed by white men to 'promote' the specific interracial relationship between the white man and Asian woman. We will further examine why they discourage white men from marrying white or American women. This will take us further into the mail-bride industry with Asian women as well as Eastern European women. 7. The U.C. Berkeley Phenomenon - Here, we will look at the unusual rise of interracial relationships between white male students, and Asian female students that occured in the early 90's. We will take a look at why a confused student may think this mirrors college campuses across the country. 8. Asian Literature: Here we will take a look at publications like "The Joy Luck Club", that have given rise to the statement that Asians are the up and coming authors in our society (aka the Asian woman who's mind has been freed from an Asian male dominated mind-set.). We will see why there are very few publications that give a candid view of Asian stereotypes written by an Asian male author. 9. The Role Of The White Man - We will look at why (us) Caucasian males allow, and even encourage exploitation and stereotype, and make excuses that some Asian males are merely 'angry' because they can't get a date. 10. Asiaphelia: An Overview - This, our final segment; we will tie the historical aspects of Asian exploitation/exoticism to the modern era. We will break down Asiaphelia into it's various categories like the differences between an Asiaphile, and a Japanophile.... Read more at: . |
